Lunugamwehera Safari

About
Lunugamvehera National Park is one of Sri Lanka's lesser-known gems, offering a tranquil escape from the usual tourist crowds. Declared in 1995, this park protects the catchment area of the Lunugamvehera reservoir and serves as a crucial habitat for water birds and elephants. It also maintains the water levels for downstream tanks in Kirindi Oya and the wetlands of Bundala National Park.
Lunugamvehera provides a vital corridor for elephants migrating between Yala and Udawalawe National Parks. After reopening post-civil war, the park now welcomes visitors eager to explore its serene environment.
For leopard sightings, enter through the 'Galge Entrance' near Yala's Block 3, also known as Weheragala (Yala Block V). Unlike Block 1 (Famous Yala Safari), where leopards are accustomed to vehicles, leopards in Weheragala are less used to visitors, making sightings rarer but more private when they do occur.
