Wasgamuwa Safari

About
Wasgamuwa National Park, spanning the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts and bordered by the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, offers a diverse landscape of grasslands, dry evergreen forests, and wetlands. This park is a sanctuary for elephants, sloth bears, leopards, and sambar deer, and it's a haven for birdwatchers with over 143 species recorded.

Originally established as a reserve forest by British colonial authorities in the early 20th century, the area was later expanded into the national park it is today. Wasgamuwa also features several significant cultural and historical sites, including ancient Buddhist temples and the ruins of Polonnaruwa, offering a rich blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
