Minneriya and Kaudulla Safari

About

Explore the wonders of Kaudulla and Minneriya National Parks, two wildlife sanctuaries near Polonnaruwa, renowned for their diverse terrain and exceptional sightings, particularly of the famed Sri Lankan elephants.

Kaudulla National Park
Nestled around the ancient Kaudulla Reservoir, this park features dry evergreen forests, vast grasslands, and scrubby forests. Home to massive herds of elephants, wild boar, sambar deer, leopards, rusty spotted cats, and sloth bears, Kaudulla is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Birdwatchers can enjoy over 160 species, including the Asian spoonbill, gray-headed fish eagle, and black-headed ibis, along with reptiles like the Indian black turtle. At sunset, witness pelicans flocking to the reservoir, or glide along its waters in a paddle boat or catamaran for a unique perspective.
Minneriya National Park
Famed for its historical tank built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen, Minneriya's landscape comprises grasslands, tropical forests, and wetlands. This park is inhabited by toque macaques, purple-faced langur monkeys, and spotted deer.
The Gathering of Elephants
From June to October, witness 'The Gathering of Elephants' at Minneriya and Kaudulla, where hundreds of elephants congregate at the reservoirs' water edges to feed on lush green grass. This spectacular event offers a rare opportunity to observe the social dynamics of Sri Lankan elephants up close.
